Buffalo, NY -  In its seventh consecutive year, "Step Up to the Plate," a fundraising campaign to benefit the homebound elderly and disabled served by Meals on Wheels programs in New York, raised $28,000 in November through the support of customers at Wilson Farms.

All Wilson Farms, Sugarcreek and Wilson Farms Xpress stores statewide participated in the campaign. Each store sold paper plates to customers for $1. The money raised in each store will be allotted to the nearest home-delivered nutrition program.

A portion of the proceeds will help [Meals on Wheels for Western New York provide ready-to-eat hot and cold meals to its homebound recipients throughout Erie County. The organization serves nearly 1,600 homebound individuals each weekday.

"The money raised will allow us to better serve people needing home-delivered meals.”said Benjamin A. Gair III, chief executive officer at Meals on Wheels for WNY.

[Meals on Wheels for Western New York does not deny anyone service who is unable to contribute toward the suggested, voluntary rate of $6.50 per day.]

“The success of the campaign would not be possible without the support of Wilson Farms and its staff, who encourage customers to help provide life-sustaining food for homebound neighbors,” added Gair. “Once again, our customers have shown their true generosity through this campaign for Meal on Wheels,” said Paul Nanula, chief executive officer and president of Wilson Farms Inc., “We thank our customers and associates for their continued support for endeavors such as this, which allow us to give back to the communities, neighborhoods and people we serve.”

To date, “Step Up to the Plate” has raised more than $212,000 for Meals on Wheels programs in New York state. A check presentation ceremony will take place at the beginning of 2011, where each participating Meals on Wheels program will be awarded.
